Built in 1600, Barford House began as two cottages and a working dairy, set among a collection of smaller outbuildings under separate ownership. Over time, these elements were gradually brought together, forming the house as it stands today—layered, characterful, and shaped by centuries of quiet evolution.

Traces of its early history remain throughout—from the original fireplace and exposed Elizabethan beams to the traditional room proportions and three separate staircases that continue to shape the natural rhythm of the house.

The land was consolidated under four generations of the Timms and Upton families, who owned the house for over 150 years until the early-21^st century. Many of the windows and doors installed during their stewardship remain in place, offering a quiet continuity between past and present.

The house then entered a new chapter as a secondary residence for London-based families—a place to retreat to the countryside. The most significant transformation came in the 1970s, when the cottages and dairy were unified into a single home, alongside the addition of the swimming pool and further enhancements.

The current owner’s family acquired Barford House in the 1980s, and it has remained in their care ever since. During this time, the gardens were thoughtfully shaped—expanding the pond, planting what is now a maturing woodland, and encouraging a rich sense of biodiversity. Today, the grounds feel both established and gently informal, with space to wander, gather, or simply sit and take in the surroundings.

In recent years, the house has passed into the current owner’s stewardship. It has been carefully restored, with original features preserved and interiors sensitively updated—balancing comfort with a respect for the building’s history.

Today, for the first time in its 400-year history, Barford House is open to guests beyond the family.
